Learning Objectives

Upon satisfactory completion of the Master of Public Health in Environmental and Occupational Health, students should be able to:

  • define the major sources of chemical, microbial and physical agent contamination identified in water, air, soil, and food
  • understand the effects of environmental contaminants on the human body
  • describe basic methods of assessment and control of environmental health hazards
  • describe the impact of social and behavioral influences on health and the interaction of these influences with environmental hazards
  • organize data and information, prepare technical reports, and give oral presentations on recognition, evaluation, management and control of environmental health hazards
  • identify current regulatory problems and legislative authorities directed at managing contamination in water, air, soil and food
  • develop or collaborate in management program conducted by local, state, and federal regulatory agencies to accomplish the prevention or control of adverse effects of environmental hazards on human health
  • effectively communicate environmental health risks and prevention strategies to potential affected communities

Program Curriculum and Course Requirements

MPH Environmental and Occupational Health students are required to complete the school and departmental MPH core courses, MPH selected electives, a practicum, and a thesis or degree project. Additional courses must be taken as necessary to reach a total of 63 credits.

Suggested Schedule

Due to the number of options available to satisfy the requirements of the MPH Environmental and Occupational Health program, the typical schedule is variable. The table below lists all of the courses that satisfy the requirements and a suggested schedule for the first and second years.

In order to get a more realistic picture of what your schedule will look like each quarter, you may wish to highlight the courses that you plan to take to meet each requirement and add your electives to the table. If you have a heavy schedule in a given quarter, it may be possible for some of the courses to be moved to the alternate year.

If you do make schedule changes, please note that some of the courses have conflicting schedules and must be taken in alternate years. It is also suggested that you run schedule changes by your advisor to ensure that they will not affect your progress on your thesis research or degree project.

Notes and Schedule Conflicts

[1] Although not required, the second quarter of Biostatistics (BIOST 512 or 518) is recommended for MPH EOH students.

[2] EPI 511 and EPI 512 conflict with HSERV 522. Project students planning to take HSERV 522 should take EPI during the first year and HSERV 522 during the second year.

[3] HSERV 511 Friday session not required for non-Health Services students.

[4] HSERV 511 and ENV H 577 have schedule conflicts. If you do not plan to take ENV H 577, HSERV 511 can be moved to your second year.

[5] ENV H 545 and ENV H 514 have schedules that conflict. If you plan to take more than one of these courses to satisfy your requirements, you will need to take them in alternate years.

[6] ENV H 570 and HSERV 510 conflict and cannot be taken the same year.
