Undergraduate Summer Research Program

Environmental Health Research Experience Program (EHREP)

Environmental and occupational health is an interdisciplinary field that uses the tools of science to solve human health problems related to the environment. If you want to use your science background to help people live healthier lives, this research program is for you.

The Environmental Health Research Experience Program (EH REP) is a funded nine week, summer experience for talented undergraduates who express strong interest in environmental health science research. Each year, the department will select students from a national pool of applicants and pair each with a faculty mentor.

"I am so glad to have participated in the EH REP. I learned about the many ways people can contribute to environmental health and how I can be supporting part of it. Every person I have met and experience I have had in these 9 weeks has been unbelievably wonderful."

Students from populations traditionally underrepresented in the sciences are encouraged to apply. The program is made possible by a five-year grant from the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) and generous, ongoing support from department faculty.

The experience will:

  • Provide first-hand experiences in laboratories of leading environmental and occupational health researchers
  • Introduce students to key environmental and occupational health concepts
  • Offer academic research exposure that will help students be more competitive for graduate school.

"I really appreciated the fact that I was given the opportunity to choose a project that suited my interests and the needs of the lab."

Beyond the Lab

In addition to their work with a faculty mentor in a laboratory setting, participants have many opportunities to learn about the field of Environmental Health, get to know fellow participants, and explore Seattle! Along with the incredible opportunities surrounding research experience, the program offers a weekly seminar that covers some of the field's most current and relevant topics, as well as environmental health field trips.

The program also sponsors some great social outings for participants to get to know each other—and Seattle—better. 2011 activities included the Seattle Underground Tour and a canoe trip from the Waterfront Activities Center.

"I'm so grateful for my experiences and friends I made along the way. I wasn't expecting what I got, but what I got was so much more than I expected."
