Duwamish River Bike Tour

Join us on Saturday, Aug 25th for a leisurely but invigorating bike ride through the South Park and Georgetown neighborhoods in South Seattle. Learn about the history of the Duwamish River and the efforts that are underway to clean up this designated Superfund site. The ride will begin and end at the Duwamish Waterway Park, where the annual Duwamish River Festival begins at noon. The festival features invited speakers, musicians and dancers representing the diverse cultures of the Duwamish Valley, free food, giveaways, and a raffle.

This year the UW School of Public Health is putting together a team to participate in the ride and learn more about the public health challenges facing the communities surrounding the Duwamish River. Please join us for this fun and edifying event!

Description of Bike Ride

The family-friendly 7.5 mile route will start from the Duwamish Waterway Park and head south before crossing the over the river and traveling north to Georgetown. From there we will cross back over the river, arriving back at the Park in time for the start of the festival at noon. The route is mostly flat and suitable for recreational bikers. Riders will have the option of riding with a "tour guide" or doing a self-guided tour with a map that will be provided at registration. Either way, you will have opportunities to stop periodically and learn about the river's history, industry, culture, and wildlife, as well as what the future might hold for this vibrant part of Seattle. After the ride, everyone is encouraged to join the 7th Annual Duwamish River Festival, featuring music, food, kids activities, booths of information about Duwamish environmental issues, kayak and boat rides, and more!

Registration begins at 9:00 am at Duwamish Waterway Park

Guided tours leave at 9:30 and 9:45 am

Questions? Contact Marilyn Hair, .

If you are interested in volunteering to help out with either the bike ride or the Festival, please contact Wes Smith ( ).

Speaker: Dr. Glenn Talaska
Director, Environmental and Occupational Hygiene Division, Department of Environmental Health, University of Cincinnati College of Medicine

Professor Glenn Talaska will also give a seminar, "Biological Monitoring Exposures to Workplace Carcinogens: Progress in Protecting Worker Health," at the University of Washington on October 10.

Dr. Talaska earned his PhD in Genetic Toxicology from the University of Texas Medical Branch, Galveston, and his MSPH from the University Washington, Department of Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences, where he studied under Peters Breysse. His research is related to biological monitoring and chemical carcinogens and includes DNA adduct analysis, cytogenetics, and metabolite analysis. Dr. Talaska is the Vice Chair of the ACGIH Biological Exposure Indices Committee.

About the Lectureship
About the Lectureship: The Peter A. Breysse Memorial Lectureship was established by the Breysse family and friends in honor of Peter Breysse, Associate Professor Emeritus in the Department of Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences to recognize his dedication to worker and public health. Peter Breysse was one of the department's founding faculty members, and he was instrumental in the development of the industrial hygiene program. Active nationally and in local professional communities, Breysse was a tireless advocate for improving people's health. He is credited with populating the ranks of industrial hygienists throughout the country. The endowed lectureship enables the department to recruit national and international speakers to share new ideas and inspire faculty, staff, and students to continue his legacy.

Future of Occupational Health Speaker Series: Hester Lipscomb and Hans Kromhout

Co-sponsored by Noah Seixas, Janice Camp, & Joel Kaufman, DEOHS

May 1, DEOHS will welcome Hester Lipscomb (Occupational & Environmental Medicine, Duke University) and Hans Kromhout (Institute for Risk Assessment, Utrecht University, The Netherlands) to provide their big picture insights into the Future of Occupational Health. They will tackle the theme of looking at the measurement of burden and impact in occupational health, discussing what factors are driving trends in both occupational injury, and workplace exposure to air contaminants, what these trends tell us about risk, and how to measure these metrics better in the future.

Carbon Nanotubes have the potential to create faster
electronics and cancer-killing drugs, but according to Megan Cartwright,
they might be as dangerous as asbestos. Cartwright, a Toxicology PhD
student, will share the positive benefits of these tiny fibers, but also
their negative side effects. She says their tiny size makes them perfect
for drugs and laptops — it also adds to their lung-damaging potential.
She'll also share what could make them safer.

Washington Global Health Alliance Discovery Series: "The Epidemic of Birth Defects in Iraq: Conversations with an Iraqi Doctor"

Co-sponsored by (see below)

Speaker: Dr. Muhsin Al-Sabbak

About the speaker:

Dr. Muhsin Al-Sabbak is a Obstetrician at Basra
Maternity Hospital. He has been interviewed by the international media
on the birth defects crisis in Iraq. He is the lead author of a recent
paper on this epidemic.

Description:

After the 2003 invasion of Iraq, the nation’s cities have been
witnessing increasing rates of congenital birth defects and cancers.
Public exposure to neurotoxic metals has been discovered in children and
residents of Fallujah and Basrah, two cities in central and southern
Iraq. Iraqi doctors have repeatedly asked for international help in
dealing with this unprecedented crisis of birth defects.

The issue of environmental effects of warfare in Iraq comes at an
interesting time, with another war beginning in that region. This event
offers the Seattle community the opportunity to hear first-hand from a
doctor witnessing and researching birth defects in Iraq, on a topic that
has not been previously addressed in Seattle. An Iraqi Obstetrician, Dr.
Muhsin Al-Sabbak, has been spear-heading efforts to bring international
attention to the epidemic of birth defects. He, and Mozhgan
Savabieasfahani, an Environmental Toxicologist at the University of
Michigan, are touring U.S. universities to highlight this important
issue. They will present evidence from their research on the
far-reaching effects of the kinds of environmental toxins that are
released with widespread use of today’s military weapons.

The Great Washington ShakeOut

As we all know, earthquakes are unpredictable and may happen where you live, work, or travel. Most injuries in earthquakes are from falling or flying objects. On Thursday, October 16, members of the School of Public Health community will join millions of people worldwide for the Great Washington ShakeOut, a drill to practice how to be safe during earthquakes. At 10:16am (Pacific Time), we will Drop, Cover, and Hold On:

· DROP to the ground (before the earthquake drops you!),

· COVER* your head and neck with your arms and seek additional shelter by getting under a sturdy desk or table if nearby; and

· HOLD ON to your shelter and be prepared to move with it until the shaking stops.

Meet workers who sew Husky apparel, and hear how UW can support dignified working conditions and human rights in the global garment industry. The Alta Gracia Factory, located in the Dominican Republic Free Trade Zone, is the first college logo t-shirt project to pay its workers a living wage, respect their democratic voice on the job, and provide a safe and healthy work environment. The result of decades of collaboration between college students and garment worker unions worldwide, Alta Gracia offers a stark contrast to the often exploitative conditions in garment factories and is transforming the lives of workers, the community of Villa Altagracia, and the wider apparel industry.

Exposure to air pollution is widely recognized as a contributor to adverse health outcomes. In the last five years, the international research community has had a greater focus on the role and effects of near roadway pollution on human health. Scientists--including Professor Joel Kaufman--will share information on and discuss the relationship between exposure to near roadway pollution and human health.  View the webinar on your own or as part of the NIEHS Virtual Community Forum in Room 2228 in the Roosevelt Building.
