About
I am an Affiliate Professor of Bioethics in the UW School of Medicine with 20+ years of scholarship, research, and teaching in the field of bioethics. I spent 7 years as the Associate Dean for Student and Postdoctoral Affairs within the UW Graduate School and have a passion for professional development in and out of academic careers. I am currently the Associate Director at Room One, a robust community-based social services organization within the Methow Valley (rural Washington). I have a strong track record in funded research initiatives that aim toward culture and practice change in medicine and science, and have been committed to enhancing educational experiences across the pipeline. As a grant-funded faculty, I was a co-investigator or Core Lead on numerous NIH, CDC, and HRSA funded grants and research centers. I have served as Community Engagement and Ethics Core Director for the EDGE Center at UW for the past several years, and have been a core member since 2003. Along with two other of my research centers (Institute for Translational Health Sciences – CTSA – and the NHGRI funded Center for Excellence in ELSI Research), we actively engaged questions of ethics of research with vulnerable populations, questions of how to navigate or adapt academic and research policy in light of emerging technologies and changing cultures, and overall, facilitating impactful research partnerships. I am committed to working for environmental justice and health equity.
