People whose jobs involve working with animals often mention the need to find medical providers who understand the special demands of their jobs.

The Healthy Animal Worker Clinic (HAWC) is a program of the Occupational and Environmental Medicine Clinic located at Seattle’s Harborview Medical Center.

The HAWC program provides specialized services for individuals working with animals and animal products who may have concerns about exposures to allergens, chemicals, infectious agents and injury risks through their work.

The goal is to provide patient care for the recognition, management and prevention of occupational injury and disease in animal workers. Conditions seen in the clinic include:

  • Laboratory animal allergies.

  • Repetitive motion/ergonomic injuries in animal workers.

  • Follow-ups for animal bites and infectious disease exposures.

  • Compassion fatigue.

  • Reproductive risks related to animal contact.
