Animals as Sentinels of Environmental Health Hazards

In many situations, animals have greater exposure to the environment compared to humans living nearby, and therefore animals can be like the “canary in the coal mine”, with disease events in animals providing warning of the risks to humans as well from an environmental hazard.

Tracking wildlife disease and injury in Washington State

COHR is collaborating with the WA State Department of Fish and Wildlife on analysis of data on wildlife injury and disease in Washington State. The research aims to identify trends in what is happening to the wildlife, and the possibility that disease events could have relevance to human health as well.
