Respiratory Health and Indoor Air Quality in Washington's Cannabis Industry

Marijuana is now medically legal in 38 states and recreationally legal in 11 states, including Washington, Oregon and Alaska. Due to the drug's illegal history, there is a lack of scientific study on the occupational hazards for this workforce. A recent report identified 23 potentially hazardous exposures, and with the rapid growth of the cannabis industry, there is now a large worker population with potential exposures.

Practical Solutions for Pesticide Safety

Handheld pesticide application takes place in farming and forestry work, and unintentional exposures can be common. Few evidence-based and practical solutions have been developed and shared across these industries.

PNASH works with farmers, educators, and researchers across the Northwest to test and develop solutions originally developed by growers and workers for themselves. We have expanded from our original airblast application systems, to now include handheld and greenhouse applications. Each solution is assessed for the goals:

Home Air in Agriculture- Pediatric Intervention (HAPI)

The primary goal of the HAPI project, made possible through El Proyecto Bienestar, is to reduce exposure to inflammatory agents and allergens in the homes of an environmental justice community of Latino children residing in an area of intense dairy and crop-based industrial agricultural production. Community-based participatory activities in the Yakima Valley, Washington State have identified pediatric asthma as a priority health concern for the community.

Community Health Interventions with Yakima Ag Workers "El Proyecto Bienestar"

El Proyecto Bienestar (EPB) or, Well Being Project, is a long-standing community health intervention effort guided by a Yakima Valley community advisory board. The partnership is comprised of: The University of Washington; Northwest Communities Education Center/Radio KDNA; Heritage University; and Yakima Valley Farm Workers Clinic.

Aggravating Factors of Asthma in a Rural Environment (AFARE)

This community-based project characterized ambient triggers of asthma in the rural setting by following 50 (children and adults) asthmatic community participants, mapping their exacerbations and comparing these with known agricultural exposures. 
 
Communities living in rural agricultural settings may be exposed to an array of biological (e.g. organic dust from animal and crop products, bacteria, fungi, endotoxins) and non-biological particles and gases (e.g. pesticides, hydrogen sulfide and ammonia).
