Local Chocolate Shop Tour Makes Safety Sweet!

Northwest Center ERC students recently toured the Theo Chocolate Factory in Seattle, Washington to learn about safety and health in a food manufacturing facility. Students had the opportunity to view the factory in motion, as workers produced chocolate before their eyes.

At the Theo Chocolate factory, trainees practiced their skills in identifying potential workplace hazards - but were hard pressed to find anything of concern in this safety-conscious facility! Theo Chocolate produced their first run of chocolate bars in 2006, and has been committed to sustainability, social responsibility, and safety ever since.

We learn that cacao farmers in Peru and the
Congo are able to grow without chemical
pesticides or fertilizers by maintaining a
healthy ecosystem on their farms!

During the tour, students learned about the Fair For Life Certification, and how the chocolate company works to maintain the certification's lofty standards for fair working conditions, sustainable practices, and betterment of local impact.

Companies who earn the Fair Life Certification are inspected regularly to ensure they are maintaining standards. For Theo, this includes safety and health inspections in both their Seattle Facility, and the farms and facilities across the globe where their organic cocoa beans are

The Northwest Center ERC Trainees were thrilled and inspired to tour a company where safe and healthy workplaces across the globe are a priority. Through their training with the Northwest Center, these budding professionals will soon go out into the world to help companies like Theo create safer and healthier workplaces in our local communities, and across the world.
