ERC-supported trainee and PhD candidate Vanessa Galavíz recently received a Community Volunteer Recognition Award at the UW Martin Luther King, Jr. Tribute event on January 12, 2012. Galavíz was recognized for the community outreach work she has done in Seattle and in San Diego, California.

Galavíz's research will help establish a biomarker for diesel particulate matter exposures that could be applied to a wide variety of air pollution study settings. Her work has helped inform the community of San Ysidro, a town south of San Diego, where exposure to air pollution near the Mexico-US border is a concern.

Vanessa’s other passion is outreach to high school and undergraduate students, particularly underrepresented students, to inspire them to enter science and to support their academic excellence.
