Abstract:

Dental professionals navigate an intricate landscape of occupational hazards that can profoundlyimpact their health, well-being, and professional longevity. To better understand the hazards, aliterature review was conducted. This literature review goes into the pervasive biological, chemical, physical, and psychosocial risks that are found in dental environments. Theseprofessionals face exposure to infectious pathogens, toxic chemicals, and ergonomic challenges, all compounded by the psychological demands inherent in patient-centered care. The threat ofblood-borne pathogens in respiratory infections is ever present, while chemical exposures tovolatile organic compounds and mercury containing materials pose long term health risks.Physical strains, particularly musculoskeletal disorders, arise from repetitive, position-driventasks that require sustained, awkward positions. Psychosocial pressures, often overlooked, addfurther complexity, manifesting as chronic stress and mental health challenges that can shadow aprofessional career. This review underscores the critical importance of implementing advanced protective measures, including enhanced personal protective equipment, engineering controls, and robustadministrative protocols. Such strategies are not merely preventative but essential to protectingthe health and safety of the dental workforce. The findings presented here illuminate a pathforward for strengthening occupational health standards, advocating for rigorous training, policyinnovation, and a renewed commitment to the safety of dental professionals. Addressing theserisks with urgency and empathy fosters a healthier, more resilient workforce, dedicated todelivering care within a safeguarded, supportive environment.
