For programs in public, environmental and occupational health, the UW Department of Environmental & Occupational Health Sciences (DEOHS) is ranked fourth in the world and second in the U.S. in the latest rankings of best global universities by U.S. News and World Report.
This represents a jump of two spots from last year in DEOHS’s worldwide ranking. In the U.S., the UW is now the top public university in this category, second only to Harvard.
To compete for the top global and national rankings, criteria include the number of publications produced, papers cited and research performance.
“This latest ranking affirms DEOHS's position as a global leader in public, environmental and occupational health,” said DEOHS Professor and Chair June Spector. “It is a testament to the dedication, expertise and collaborative spirit of our faculty, staff and students. Their work advances innovative research and practical, evidence-based solutions that improve the health of communities and workplaces locally and around the world.”
Building healthy communities
DEOHS, housed in the UW School of Public Health, supports healthy communities and safe workplaces. Our department’s research addresses some of today’s most urgent health challenges — from investigating the health impacts of climate change and air pollution to preventing on-the-job injuries and illnesses, especially in the most vulnerable populations.
Five other UW programs also ranked in the top 10, including molecular biology and genetics (No. 6); microbiology (No. 7); biology and biochemistry (No. 7); infectious diseases (No. 7) and clinical medicine (No. 8).
In the list’s rankings for global universities overall, the UW is No. 12 in the world and No. 3 among U.S. public institutions. Read more at UW News.
