Phillip Campbell started in radiation protection while serving onboard nuclear submarines while in the US Navy. He got out of the Navy in 2002 and was hired by Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center as a Radiation Safety Technician. Campbell was promoted to Assistant Radiation Safety Officer in 2006. In 2010, he accepted a position as a Health Physicist at Madigan Army Medical Center. He started at the University of Washington in December 2011 as a Compliance Analyst (Health Physicist). He moved into the Radioactive Materials Compliance Manager position in December 2012, and was promoted to Radiation Safety Officer in May 2013.
He currently manages the Radiation Safety section of Environmental Health and Safety at the UW. They have a staff of 10.5 FTE and are responsible for the safe use of radiation at all UW locations including both medical centers. This includes the safe use of radioactive material, radiation producing machines, lasers, non-ionizing radiation (RF, UV, EMF, etc.), and large magnetic sources not associated with medical use.
