Environmental Health

Esther Min (she/her) is a Clinical Assistant Professor at the Department of Environmental & Occupational Health Sciences, School of Public Health, University of Washington. She is also part of the Northwest Pediatric Environmental Health Specialty Unit (PEHSU).

Dr. Burkhart is a geographer and climate scientist and is an Assistant Professor of Health Metrics Sciences at the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) at the University of Washington. In this role, she works on the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) project, conducting research on environmental risks and methods to include exposure to suboptimal temperature. Dr.

Dr. Julianne Meisner is an Adjunct Assistant Professor in the UW Department of Environmental & Occupational Health Sciences (DEOHS) and an Assistant Professor in the UW Department of Global Health. A veterinarian with a PhD in Epidemiology, Dr. Meisner’s research interests focus on the intersection of human, animal and environmental health. 

Emily Hovis is an Assistant Teaching Professor in the UW Department of Environmental & Occupational Health Sciences.

Cynthia L. Curl, MS, PhD is an Associate Professor in the Department of Community and Environmental Health at Boise State University, where she studies the intersection between agricultural production and human health and directs the Curl Agricultural Health Lab.

Dr. Judit Marsillach is Assistant Professor in the Department of Environmental & Occupational Health Sciences at the University of Washington School of Public Health. In May 2021, she was appointed as the Sheldon D. Murphy Endowed Chair in Toxicology and Environmental Health.

Karen Levy is Professor in the UW Department of Environmental & Occupational Health Sciences (DEOHS). She studies the ecology and epidemiology of environmentally-mediated infectious diseases.

Dr. Sarah Collier is an Assistant Professor in Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences and core faculty in food systems, nutrition, and health within the Nutritional Sciences Program.

Dr. Kasner is an Assistant Teaching Professor with a research focus on leveraging technology to prevent injury and illness among working populations.

Dr Leme works with Professor Faustman in DEOHS in her Current Topics in Risk Assessment courses, which includes aspects of chemistry and toxicology. Their work together focuses on sustainability and reduced animal use around the globe, trying to provide the basis for current discussions on global sustainability and global acceptance of non-animal testing.

Dr Galaviz is involved in environmental justice, and has given guest lectures, partnered on grant research with our professors, and supported graduate students on this topic. She keeps DEOHS connected with public health programs in California, at the EPA, in border research, and in local community organizations. 

Research Services Program Manager/Toxicologist employed by the Hazardous Waste Management Program in King County (Haz Waste Program) at Public Health -- Seattle & King County. Responsibilities include setting the research agenda for the Haz Waste Program and supporting the research needs of both internal and external stakeholders.

I became interested in the characterization of urban air quality after working in Beijing in the mid-1990s. I make measurements to model the spatial and temporal distribution of pollutants. I am particularly interested in bringing new methods and technologies into exposure assessment for air pollution health studies.

Anne M. Riederer, MS, MSFS, ScD is an environmental health scientist focused on assessing exposures of young children and pregnant women to heavy metals, pesticides, and other environmental neurotoxicants. Before moving to Seattle, she was: American Association for the Advancement of Science Fellow (2010-2012) hosted by Dr.

Marguerite Pappaioanou, DVM, MPVM, PhD, is an Affiliate Professor in the Department of Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences, School of Public Health at the University of Washington in Seattle, where she contributes to the research, teaching, and outreach programs of the Center for One Health Research.

Dr. James Meador is an environmental toxicologist with NOAA Fisheries in Seattle. He earned a PhD in aquatic toxicology from the University of Washington and has more than 30 years' experience in the field. Jim's research interests include exposure assessment and characterization of toxic effects for metals, PAHs, tributyltin, PCBs and contaminants of emerging concern.

Dr Lu is a Professor in the Department of Environmental Engineering and Sciences in the College of Resources and Environment at Southwest University in Chongqing, China. His teaching and research is focused on environmental physiology and toxicology.  He assists Chinese students from Zhejiang University to apply for graduate studies within DEOHS. 

Dr. Tom Lewandowski is a toxicologist and chemist working in the Seattle, WA office of Gradient, a science consulting firm. He received his Ph.D. in toxicology from the University of Washington School of Public Health in 2000. He also holds an MPH in environmental health from the University of Michigan. Dr.

Dr. Kathi Lefebvre is a research biologist at NOAA's Northwest Fisheries Science Center. She is also an Affiliate Associate Professor in the UW Department of Environmental & Occupational Health Sciences.

Sun-Young Kim is a Research Assistant Professor in the Institute of Health and Environment, at the Seoul National University.

I have always been fascinated by mass spectrometry and its use as a powerful and sensitive method for chemical measurement and identification. My research interests have always been aimed at direct chemical measurements of trace analytes in complicated, real samples.

Dr. Garry has more than 20 years of experience analyzing the biological effects of chemicals on humans and other organisms. He has extensive experience analyzing mechanisms of toxicity for both metals and organic chemicals, and has developed science-based toxicity criteria and guidelines and critically reviewed those developed by others. Andrew L. Dannenberg, MD, MPH, is an Affiliate Professor in the Department of Environmental & Occupational Health Sciences and in the Department of Urban Design and Planning at the University of Washington, where he teaches courses on health and built environment and on health impact assessment.

Dr. Patricia Cirone retired from the U.S. Environmental Protection, Region 10 (USEPA) in 2006 where she served as the Chief of the Risk Evaluation Unit for over 20 years. Since retiring Dr. Cirone has been an Affiliate Professor at the University of Washington, Department of Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences and a consultant with Ridolfi, Inc.

Won-Seok Choi, PhD is interested in understanding the mechanisms of neuron death induced in Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease by environmental toxicants. He has investigated signaling pathways triggered by various neurotoxins to define the link to the neuro-degenerative disorders, and to discover therapeutic targets to treat and/or prevent them.

Dr. Checkoway has held faculty positions in the Department of Epidemiology at the University of North Carolina (1979-87), the University of Washington Departments of Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences (primary) and Epidemiology (joint) (1987-2013), and the University of California, San Diego, Department of Family and Preventive Medicine (2013 – present).

Dr. Takaro is a physician-scientist trained at the University of Washington, Occupational and Environmental Medicine Program. His work is directed primarily toward determining if linkages exist between occupational or environmental exposures and disease and finding public health based preventive solutions where such hazards exist.

Dr Holland works as a consultant on occupational and environmental medicine, both privately and for the Washington state Department of Labor & Industry.  He presents guest lectures for occupational medicine residents.

Rod Hoff is working with faculty to expand the UW School of Public Health's research and training programs on emerging infectious diseases and on building capacity for global health security. He gives guest lectures courses of Dr Cangelosi.
