Lianne Sheppard imagined a career in service to both science and the public good when she joined the UW faculty 24 years ago. She never anticipated that one day, she would have to choose between them.

Dr. Rachel M. Shaffer works on chemical assessments in the Center for Public Health and Environmental Assessment in the U.S. EPA’s Office of Research and Development. Dr. Shaffer has a broad background in environmental health sciences, with graduate training spanning experimental toxicology and human epidemiological research as well as experience in science policy and risk assessment.

What would it look like to equitably nourish a growing global population? More importantly, how do we get there – which inputs have more leverage within complex systems, and what evidence do decision-makers need in order to support public health? Dr.

Esther Min (she/her) is a Clinical Assistant Professor at the Department of Environmental & Occupational Health Sciences, School of Public Health, University of Washington. She is also part of the Northwest Pediatric Environmental Health Specialty Unit (PEHSU).

Dr. Peckham is an environmental scientist in the Hazardous Waste Management Program in the King County Department of Natural Resources and Parks, where he designs and conducts environmental and occupational health research to help reduce toxic exposures to workers and residents of King County. Dr. Peckham earned his PhD, MS and MPA from the University of Washington.  

Dr. Meghan McGinty is passionate about building the capacity of public health and medical systems, as well as our communities to respond, recover and be resilient in the face of disasters She is also deeply committed to ensuring that we have a competent public health workforce.

Dr. Sprugel has worked in preclinical research and development in the biotechnology industry in Seattle for over 25 years, including work at ZymoGenetics, PathoGenesis and Chiron. She is currently a Scientific Director in Toxicology Sciences at Amgen in Seattle, where she works on safety assessments and nonclinical development strategies for drugs in the areas of inflammation and oncology.

Bruce Millies teaches occupational safety and health continuing education courses. He is a former lawyer who practiced environmental law, took a break from the law to earn an MS in environmental health from the University of Washington, and then decided to pursue a career in Industrial Hygiene.

Dr. Mazengia is a Public Health Scientist specializing in Environmental Public Health, Microbiology and Epidemiology of food and waterborne pathogens.

As Regional Science Liaison to EPA’s Office of Research and Development, I work with senior management in ORD’s Six National Program Offices, which include Human Health Risk Assessment, Chemical Safety for Sustainability (green chemistry, LCA, high throughput, comp tox, AOPs, etc.), Sustainable and Healthy Communities, Air/Climate/Energy, Homeland Security, and Safe and Sustainable Water Resour

Dr. Takaro is a physician-scientist trained at the University of Washington, Occupational and Environmental Medicine Program. His work is directed primarily toward determining if linkages exist between occupational or environmental exposures and disease and finding public health based preventive solutions where such hazards exist.

Dr. Reul is the Associate Medical Director for Occupational Disease at the Washington State Department of Labor and Industries. A board-certified occupational and environmental medicine physician, Dr. Reul is committed to working in the public interest to translate known science into effective public health and workers’ compensation policies and guidelines.

Alison Cullen joined the Evans School faculty at University of Washington in 1995. Her research involves the analysis of risks to human health and the environment, decision making in the face of risks which are uncertain or vary across populations, and the application of value of information and distributional techniques. 

The general area of my teaching and research involves the applied aspects of environmental health practice, i.e., how the principles and concepts of environmental health are actually practiced in the field, especially by local, state, tribal and federal agencies.

Howard Frumkin is Senior Vice President with the Trust for Public Land and Professor Emeritus of Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences at the University of Washington School of Public Health, where he served as Dean from 2010-2016. After serving as Dean, he led the “Our Planet, Our Health” initiative at the Wellcome Trust in London from 2018-2019.

Dr. Michael Yost is Professor and Chair of the UW Department of Environmental & Occupational Health Sciences (DEOHS). He is also the Director of the Pacific Northwest Agricultural Safety and Health Center at DEOHS. A member of the DEOHS faculty since 1993, Dr. Yost was named department chair in August 2014. 

Dr. Sipos is Associate Teaching Professor in the UW Department of Environmental & Occupational Health Sciences. She works at the intersection of food systems, community-engaged scholarship, sustainability and equity. Her teaching and research center community and regional scales. Dr.

Dr. Lianne Sheppard is the Rohm & Haas Endowed Professor in Public Health Sciences at the UW Department of Environmental & Occupational Health Sciences (DEOHS) and Professor in the UW Department of Biostatistics. In 2021, Dr.

Dr. Edmund Seto is Professor in the UW Department of Environmental & Occupational Health Sciences. He received his PhD in Environmental Health Sciences from the University of California, Berkeley. His research focuses on the quantification of exposures and risk as they relate to environmental and occupational health.

Dr. Jennifer Otten is an Associate Professor in the UW Department of Environmental & Occupational Health Sciences and faculty researcher with the UW Center for Public Health Nutrition.

Dr. Gary Franklin is a Research Professor in the UW Department of Environmental & Occupational Health Sciences and in the Department of Medicine (Neurology), as well as an Adjunct Research Professor in the UW Department of Health Systems and Population Health. Dr.

Dr. Nicole Errett’s research focuses on the development, implementation and health impacts of policies and programs that aim to build resilience in the context of public health emergencies, disasters and climate change.

Dr. Kristie L. Ebi is Professor in the University of Washington Center for Health and the Global Environment. She has been conducting research and practice on the health risks of climate variability and change for nearly 25 years.

Dr. Cohen is Teaching Professor in the Department of Environmental & Occupational Health Sciences, Assistant Chair for Stakeholder Engagement and Director of the Field Research and Consultation Group. He is a certified industrial hygienist and certified safety professional.
